People often ask me why everything I say has to do with the gay community. I am straight and a Christian but discrimination makes me angry. I can’t believe in 2010 if you are gay you can’t defend your country, you can’t marry the person you love, but you can be fired from your job just for being gay. I can’t believe that kids are being bullied so much that they think the only way out is suicide. I know it’s not just kids either.

Any of these things would make me want to speak out against the injustice but the thing that made me an activist and to not be able to shut up about it is the thing that bothers me the most. Christian’s, and I’m sorry to say I was one, using the bible to make people think that God doesn’t love them. I see the most hateful things everyday from people who say they are followers of Christ. They find ways to do away with the thing that Jesus said was the most important. He commanded us to LOVE GOD and to LOVE OTHERS. So take your favorite Leviticus verse and put it in line behind the COMMANDMENT. LOVE!

If you are gay please don’t listen to anyone who tells you that God hates you. God is crazy about you. Other people love you too. Things are going to change in the near future.  🙂

Here is a talk divided into 5 parts. Each start where the last left off. I don’t agree with everything that the Pastor says but I don’t think I agree with everything anyone says. I think his heart is closer to the heart of the guy we claim to be following if you are a Christian. It doesn’t really matter whether you think homosexuality is a sin or not, we are all sinners in one way or another. I dare you to watch the videos and then let us know what you think.  🙂 m

Real GOD vs. wee god

“An “impersonal God”– well and good. A subjective God of beauty, truth and goodness, inside our own heads — better still. A formless life-force surging through us, a vast power which we can tap — best of all. But God Himself, alive, pulling at the other end of the cord, perhaps, approaching an infinite speed, the hunter, king, husband — that is quite another matter. There comes a moment when the children who have been playing at burglars hush suddenly: was that a real footstep in the hall? There comes a moment when people who have been dabbling in religion (”Man’s search for God!”) suddenly draw back. Supposing we really found Him? We never meant it to come to that! Worse still, supposing He had found us?”—C.S. Lewis, Theological Rockstar!

Vending Machine god

This quote and cartoon make me think of this verse.

Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true wisdom. -Psalm 111:10a (New Living Translation)

I don’t think it means fear in the traditional sense. Fear that God is in Heaven watching you and waiting for you to fail so He can whack you with His stick. I think it means starting to realize who He really is. All you have to do is look at creation to be awed by His bigness and creativity. There is so much variety and it is so vast. Even to our small minds and in the tiny way we can grasp a being so complex. Now even that, as C.S. Lewis said is pretty easy. Now imagine that entity knows who you are. Imagine He wants to communicate with you. Imagine He loves you and wants to have fellowship with you. That is where it gets even scarier. A big God, cool. A big God who is intimately aware of me makes me afraid. The good news is that He does love us no matter what we’ve done.

This is the first in a series of set of images to cause you to think, discuss and act.

Comments? Thoughts? Experiences?

I heard this song again the other day (the video is below if you’d like to hear it.) and it really kicked me in the gut and ultimately changed my views on a VERY controversial issue :

Mary got pregnant from a kid named Tom who said he was in love
He said don’t worry about a thing baby doll I’m the man you’ve been dreamin’ of
But three months later he said he won’t date her or return her call
And she sweared god damn if I find that man I’m cuttin’ off his balls
And then she heads for the clinic and she gets some static walkin’ through the doors
They call her a killer, and they call her a sinner, and they call her a whore

In our society girls are taught to look for this ideal man, the Knight-In-Shining-Armor, super romantic love and boys are taught to want to get in girls’ pants. Girls are set up to be hamstrung by the slipperiest guy with the best line.  So Mary falls for Tom’s line, he gets what he wants and then bolts for the door. Mary believed that he was really who he said he was, saw a life and a future for them and now it is all gone. She doesn’t know what to do so she does the only thing that seems to be a viable option. Enter Christians, smug and Holier-Than-Thou as we usually are. Even if we don’t call her a Killer, sinner & whore, we think it. We’ll just look down our noses and pray silently for the slut.

Please don’t think that I am PRO-Abortion. I am just PRO-People. This fictional Mary and here real counterparts need us much more that the unborn baby(s). I used to get caught up in the statistics on abortion. Over a million dead. I believe those babies go immediately to heaven and are with Jesus (a place I would like to be.) The mothers are driven away from the church and God because we judge instead of pressing close to them when they need Him the most.

I’d Love to hear your comments even if you disagree. 🙂

“What It’s Like”

We’ve all seen the man at the liquor store beggin’ for your change
The hair on his face is dirty, dreadlocked and full of mange
He ask the man for what he could spare with shame in his eyes
Get a job you fuckin’ slob’s all he replied

[CHORUS]
God forbid you ever had to walk a mile in his shoes
‘Cause then you really might know what it’s like to sing the blues
Then you really might know what it’s like [x4]

Mary got pregnant from a kid named Tom who said he was in love
He said don’t worry about a thing baby doll I’m the man you’ve been dreamin’ of
But three months later he said he won’t date her or return her call
And she sweared god damn if I find that man I’m cuttin’ off his balls
And then she heads for the clinic and she gets some static walkin’ through the doors
They call her a killer, and they call her a sinner, and they call her a whore

[CHORUS]
God forbid you ever had to walk a mile in her shoes
‘Cause then you really might know what it’s like to have to choose
Then you really might know what it’s like [x4]

I’ve seen a rich man beg
I’ve seen a good man sin
I’ve seen a tough man cry
I’ve seen a loser win
And a sad man grin
I heard an honest man lie
I’ve seen the good side of bad
And the down side of up
And everything between
I licked the silver spoon
Drank from the golden cup
Smoked the finest green
I stroked the fattest dimes at least a couple of times
Before I broke their heart
You know where it ends
Yo, it usually depends on where you start

I knew this kid named Max
He used to get fat stacks out on the corner with drugs
He liked to hang out late at night
Liked to get shit faced
And keep pace with thugs
Until late one night there was a big gun fight
Max lost his head
He pulled out his chrome .45
Talked some shit
And wound up dead
Now his wife and his kids are caught in the midst of all of his pain
You know it crumbles that way
At least that’s what they say when you play the game

[CHORUS]
God forbid you ever had to wake up to hear the news
‘Cause then you really might know what it’s like to have to lose
Then you really might know what it’s like [x3]

To have to lose…

Praise The Lord

Praise the Lord, oh my soul,
And let all that’s within me praise His name.

For I will not die, I will live,
And I will tell of the Works of the Lord
And sing of His wonders.

I will not die, I will live,
‘Cause He’s a great God.
He’s a great God.

And I get to love You through whatever comes.
What a privilege
That I get to love You through whatever comes.
Oh, how sweet it is,

And nothing’s gonna take Your praise out of my mouth
As long as I shall live,

And I will not die, I will live,
I will not die, I will live.
For I will not die, I will live,
And I will tell of the Works of the Lord,

And nothing’s gonna take Your praise out of my mouth
As long as I shall live,

‘Cause He’s a great God.
He’s a great God.
You’re a great God.
You’re a great God.

KillI saw this saying on a bumper sticker on a car yesterday and it made me laugh. I’d seen it before but it’s pretty much funny every time. It also got me thinking about something Jesus said in Mathew chapter 5 verse 21&22:

“You have heard that our ancestors were told, ‘You must not murder. If you commit murder, you are subject to judgment.’ But I say, if you are even angry with someone, you are subject to judgment! If you call someone an idiot, you are in danger of being brought before the court. And if you curse someone,  you are in danger of the fires of hell.”

He also said in Matthew chapter 5 verse 27&28:

“You have heard the commandment that says, ‘You must not commit adultery.’ But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

So, like the bumper sticker says, if there weren’t laws we might kill. I know I’ve been mad enough. What kept me from it. My goodness? Nope … fear of jail and trouble. 🙂 Would you cheat on your wife or girlfriend if she wouldn’t catch you, would you take a thousand dollars that isn’t yours if you knew you could never get caught? Jesus was saying that these things are all heart things. If you would do it but you don’t want to get in trouble it’s all the same.  Do you think you are above all this cheating, stealing and hating? Do you drive differently when a cop is behind you? Have you ever slowed down from speeding when you see a cop? So why do you follow these laws? Cause you will get in trouble if you don’t. So when you do follow the traffic laws because you don’t want a ticket are you good or just subdued?

DISCLAIMER: I used “quotes” when I quoted things Jesus said even though I am almost completely sure He wasn’t speaking “New Living Translation”, everyone knows they all spoke King James Translation. 😛

unicorn I have always been a big movie guy, if you know me well you know this. Over the past few months I have started to hear things about having expectations versus the real outcome. We expect things to go a certain way and when they don’t … disappointment. Jesus’ followers expected He was going to overthrow the Romans and rule but He got executed and they were shocked. So they quit the ministry and went back to fishin’. It’s not what they expected.

What the heck does this have to do with movies, being ripped off or freakin’ unicorns? It does. As many of my mind changes involve the author Donald Miller (see previous posts if you don’t know what I’m talking about). We went and saw him last week and learned some stuff. Films are all about Story. You need to have a likable  or at least interesting character, you need to have conflict and then you need resolution. So the rip-off comes when we watch the film and Meg Ryan kisses Tom Hanks on the Empire State Building and they live happily ever after. Rocky Balboa calls out for Adrian, who runs down to the ring. As the ring announcer declares the fight for Apollo Creed by virtue of a split decision, Adrian and Rocky embrace while they profess their love to one another, not caring about the results of the fight and everyone lives happily ever after. The thing is nobody lives happily ever after. Don Miller said he thought that if he had a bestselling book and fat stacks of cash then he thought he wouldn’t have any problems and would even be able to talk to animals. Sounds silly but I bet you think there is something out there if you had it you would be happy. There isn’t and you won’t. Our story will resolve someday, and we’ll be dead when it happens.

I heard that we spend 67 billion dollars on foreign aid, helping people who don’t have enough food and water, get food and water. Sounds like a lot of money huh? Well somebody spends something like 280 billion on advertising. Trying to get you to think you need things you don’t. If you brush with this toothpaste people will like you, if you drink this beer you’ll get laid, if you don’t feed your baby this you are a bad parent. But if you do buy all of these thing you will live happily ever after and be able to talk to animals.

So what should we do? I’m going to still watch movies and TV but I’m going to try and not be looking for this fulfillment that I’m not going to find. If you want your life to be a great story that has a great resolution at your death then make a great story. You are really in control of your story. Love others, help people, serve , give, sacrifice, and be a blessing!

So You Don't Want To Go To Church Anymore

Much of these ideas came from the book “So You Don’t Want To Go To Church Anymore”. You can download it and read it for free. Here:

So You Don’t Want To Go To Church Anymore

Here are some of the things I am chewing on this week:

Does Trusting God to do what I think is best really trusting Him?

Trusting God is to allow Him to do whatever He desires. If I focus that trust on a specific outcome am I just trying to manipulate Him.

Don’t just think of the ways I can fix something, in hindsight it is rarely my idea that He uses.

Day to Day, I can do whatever He puts before me. Savor it without striving and trying to make something happen. Enjoy the process. I can trust His plan. I’m not really in control anyway but I can trust Him.

God meets your needs day by day.

In the moment celebrate what is before you.

Don’t defend yourself.

singing is not Worship, attendance is not Fellowship and rule keeping is not Relationship

Jesus didn’t leave us with a system but a Spirit.

We don’t want ONE to become a less controlled replication of the same institution. Don’t try and get from each other what should come from God.

Lets not try and figure out the best formula to “do” church. Just do life, talk about what is happening and get to know Him more.

Our participation in the Body should be much more than just here.

We will do whatever He gives us to do whith whoever He gives us to do it with.

Equip people to know Him first.

Intentionally walk together as an expression of community, Listening to God together. Sharing lives and resources. Encouraging and Caring for each other and doing whatever else God might ask us to do.

Almost Everything Changes pt 3

Faith !?!?

Faith !?!?

It really is crazy how God works sometimes but I’m way ahead of myself. 😛   So I left off with a pretty size-able rant about the church but if you know me you know I can be pretty passionate about something I believe in and I sure believe christians misrepresent God. Before I go off again we should continue on with the story … (I had updated this already but I lost it. backup, backup, backup!) So heck, I don’t even really know where I am in the story but  know it keeps getting bigger. Paige and I really kinda headed out on our own. We have some friends that are coming along side of us but most day to day decisions are us and God. We still didn’t have a place to meet so Paige saw another building pretty close to us, it was huge. I, being the Giant-of-Faith that I am, discouraged her from calling, this place was huge and nothing we could ever afford. We were still praying that God would make a way for us to get into the other smaller place. So she ended up calling the Realtor and they said it was 2900 Square feet and that it was $100,000. Now this isn’t much in Los Angeles or even Boise, ID but it’s a chunk of change here and more than we’ve got or want to borrow. So we forgot about it. A few weeks later, Paige got a message from a guy asking her to call him back. Fortunately, we are able to pay our bills so we had no fear that it was a creditor, mad at us. So she called him. His name was Richard and he was the owner of the giant house and he was just checking in to see if we were interested in the house. Paige told him that we were, and why we wanted it, and that we couldn’t afford it. He asked what kind of money we were working with.  She told him, little to none. He thought it was strange to be looking for a place with no money. She told him again that we were looking for a place for our church

Church!

Church!

/ ministry. He didn’t really say anything. So after a lull she went on. She said that she thought that God was going to put us in the place He wanted us in and that we were just trying to go where He wanted us. We know that this sounds crazy, we sound like lunatics, it is crazy, but it’s also true. Another lull as we imagine Richard getting ready to hang up the phone. He doesn’t. He just says that he thinks God may be behind the call. 🙂 See it is crazy!  Crazy but true. He says he wants to meet with us to show us the building.  CRAZY! So we set up a date a few days later. We can’t believe it.As the day gets closer both Paige and I begin to think something crazy is going to happen. We don’t know exactly what and we are afraid to get our hopes up too high, even though we trust God. Sometimes, most times, He has a different timetable that we do. Thankfully, He always has a better plan, and timing plays into that. We are afraid even though we trust because, unfortunately, we are human, which turns out to be the best option on earth (unless you are one of our Chihuahua’s). He knows we don’t have money but want to meet with us. Odd.

So the day arrives and we go to meet with Richard. We’ve prayed quite a bit about and for this moment. I’m afraid of what he is going to think of me. I’ve got a 5 inch chin, beardy thingy. I can imagine we aren’t what he expects. He’s cool right off the bat, he’s older, but he says he didn’t expect anything so he wasn’t disappointed. He warns us that the place isn’t perfect. We weren’t thinking it was. So he takes us on a tour. It is huge. I can’t even tell you how many rooms there are. They are everywhere. The floor is mostly hardwood and is beat up but mostly with a little cleaning and some varnish would be wonderful. I didn’t really have enough time to plot out how it could all work but I can see it. There is even an semi-finished upstairs. It’s all framed out to add more rooms but doesn’t have sheetrock yet. It is even set for plumbing. Cool. So we get done and he asks us what we think. We love it.
